Trip Design:  This trip was designed as a short “getaway” to the Cyclades islands, and the open-ended beginning and end mean it’s easy to add other islands or a visit of Athens according to your schedule. The Cyclades are world famous for their natural beauty, rich history, traditional villages and fabulous food. We have chosen the islands of Naxos and Santorini since they’re easy to reach from Athens and offer a heady mix of culture, luxury and natural beauty.

Arrive a few days early and add a visit to Athens, or maybe a stop on the island of Paros on your way to Naxos. Or, stay on in Santorini after the tour and hop over to nearby Ios. We can also arrange a 3-day Crete extension to explore the ancient Minoan civilization on that beautiful island.
The choice is yours, and we’ll be happy to help arrange your travel arrangements for you.

Day 1 (Saturday – April 28)

Independent arrival on Naxos and explore the island’s capital. Make your way to the port of Piraeus (one of the main sea-ports of Athens) this morning for the 7:25 ferry to Naxos. Please make sure you leave yourself enough time to get there well in advance!  The ferry takes about 5 hours, and you can buy an economy ticket and sit anywhere or else book yourself a more comfortable “airline-type seat” or even a cabin if you want to rest on the way. We’re happy to help you with these travel arrangements. Meet your guide on Naxos at 12:30 and have lunch together before setting out for an afternoon walk up through the old town to the Venetian castle which offers dramatic views down onto the village below. Later this afternoon, watch the sunset from the Portara, the unfinished temple of Apollo which dominates the harbor entrance. Enjoy dinner tonight in the little harbor front. Overnight Naxos at the charming family-run Hotel GrottaHotel and dinner included.

Day 2 (Sunday – April 29)

Naxos hike from Halki to Kouros. This morning we will shuttle to the center of the island to the former capital of Halki, where we visit one of the oldest distilleries of kitro, a local liqueur, and enjoy a Greek coffee in the village square before walking through olive groves and past a crumbling Venetian fort to a special spot for our lunch. Our hike’s last segment leads us to the truly impressive colossal statue of Kouros. Relax back at the hotel and enjoy another dinner tonight along the waterfront. Overnight Naxos. Hotel, breakfast and dinner included.

Day 3 (Monday – April 30)

Transfer to Santorini – hike the crater rim. We have a short walk around Naxos this morning and then take a ferry after lunch to one of the most spectacular places in the world: the volcanic island of Santorini. Blown apart by a massive eruption in 1500 BC, the island’s steep cliffs are surmounted by gleaming white-washed villages. We arrive around 3 p.m. and head first to the colorful town of Fira. From there we have a dramatic walk along the rim of the ancient crater to our hotel in the elegant town of Oia (pronounced “Ee-ah”). Enjoy the sunset with a glass of wine from the balcony of your hotel, and then head into town for dinner together. Hotel, breakfast and dinner included.

Day 4 (Tuesday – May 1)

The Minoan city of Thira. Today we have a short transfer to the other side of the island. The landscape is completely different but the views are no less amazing. We have a steep climb up to begin with, and then explore the ruins of ancient Thira, one of the oldest settlements in the Mediterranean. Delightfully free of tourists, the site offers an interesting view into ancient Greek cultures. Afterwards, head down to the coast and tuck into a fresh seafood feast by the sea. There’s time for a swim several times today, so bring your suit!  We return to our hotel after lunch and then get together for one final dinner in lovely Oia. Overnight Santorini.  Hotel, breakfast and dinner included.

Day 5 (Wednesday – May 2)

Morning flight to Athens. You are free to leave Santorini when you wish, in fact, you might like to extend your stay a day or two, or head off to another island. The choice is yours. We offer a transfer to the airport for the 11:00 departure back to Athens (arriving at noon), but there are earlier flights if you need to make international connections. Santorini is served by Aegean Airlines and Olympus Airlines to Athens as well as by other carriers which fly directly to other European hubs. For example, EasyJet flies to London for as little as ?60. Breakfast and (1) airport transfer included. Flight not included.
